How to start a secret chat on Android or iPhone, set the self-destruct timer and verify the key, plus what Telegram's encrypted mode protects, and its limits.
By default, your Telegram conversations are cloud chats: convenient and synced everywhere, but not end-to-end encrypted. For your most sensitive conversations, the app offers a different mode called a secret chat. You need to know where to find it, since it is not available on every app, and you need to understand what it actually protects. This guide covers how it differs from a regular chat, how to start one on Android and iOS, how the self-destruct timer and key verification work, and the limits that no encryption can remove.
Cloud chat vs secret chat: what changes
A cloud chat is encrypted between your device and Telegram’s servers, then stored in encrypted form on those servers. That is what lets you pick up your full history on a new phone, a tablet, the desktop app or the web version. The trade-off is that the service holds the keys needed to decrypt those messages.
A secret chat works differently:
- End-to-end encryption: the keys exist only on the two devices taking part in the conversation.
- No server storage: according to Telegram, the content of these chats is not kept on its infrastructure.
- Tied to one device: the chat only exists on the phone where it was started, and on your contact’s device.
- No forwarding: messages received in a secret chat cannot be forwarded anywhere else.
Starting a secret chat on Android and iOS
A secret chat is always opened with a specific contact, from their profile. Menu labels may vary slightly depending on your app version and language.
On Android
- Open your conversation with the person, then tap their name at the top of the screen to see their profile.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Pick the option to start a secret chat, then confirm.
In some versions, the new message button at the bottom of your chat list also offers a new secret chat directly.
On iPhone and iPad
- Open your contact’s profile by tapping their name or photo in the conversation.
- Tap the “…” (More) button.
- Select the option to start a secret chat and confirm.
The new chat shows up as a separate entry in your list, marked with a padlock. Until your contact’s device comes online, it may stay pending before you can use it.
What about computers?
Telegram Desktop and the web versions do not offer secret chats. Telegram explains this by how those apps work: they reload messages from the cloud every time they start, whereas a secret chat needs permanent storage on the device. The native macOS app has long been an exception, so check whether your version includes the option.
Self-destruct timer and screenshots
In a secret chat, you can set messages, photos, videos and files to delete themselves automatically. Tap the clock icon, which the official FAQ places in the input field on iOS and in the top bar on Android, then choose a duration. The countdown does not start when you send the message: it starts once the message appears on your contact’s screen, when it gets two check marks. The message then disappears from both devices.
Even without a timer, deleting a message on your side tells your contact’s app to delete it too.
Be careful with screenshots. Telegram says it makes every effort to alert you when your contact takes one, while admitting that some systems cannot reliably detect them and that the alert can be bypassed. Nothing stops someone from photographing the screen with another device, either. The timer limits how long a message lives; it does not guarantee that nobody copied it.
Verifying the encryption key
When a secret chat is created, the two devices exchange keys using the Diffie-Hellman method. To make sure nobody has slipped into the middle of that exchange, Telegram shows an image that represents the chat’s key, a kind of visual fingerprint.
- In the secret chat, tap your contact’s name to open the chat info.
- Open the encryption key section.
- Compare the image with the one on your contact’s screen, ideally side by side or through a channel you trust.
If both images match, the chat is secure. If they do not, avoid using it for anything sensitive. According to Telegram’s technical documentation, the official apps also replace the key automatically after about a hundred messages or a week of use, which helps protect past messages.
What a secret chat does not protect
One device, no backup
A secret chat is not stored in the cloud. If you log out of Telegram or switch phones, it is gone, and you will not find it on your tablet or computer.
No groups or channels
This mode only works one-to-one. Groups and channels remain cloud conversations without end-to-end encryption. Telegram calls are end-to-end encrypted, but that is a separate feature.
Metadata
Encryption protects the content, not everything around it. According to its privacy policy, Telegram collects details such as your IP address and the devices and apps you use, and may keep them for up to 12 months to fight spam and abuse. The policy also says that, in response to a valid court order, it may disclose IP addresses and phone numbers to the authorities.
A compromised device
Messages have to be decrypted to be displayed. If your phone or your contact’s phone is infected with spyware, or unlocked by someone else, the conversation can be read. Keep notification previews on the lock screen in mind as well.
When to use a secret chat
Save it for truly sensitive one-to-one conversations, on a phone you keep with you and lock with a passcode. For everything else, cloud chats are more convenient.
