Telegram Privacy Settings to Change Before Joining Groups

Joining a big public group is a bit like walking into a room full of strangers. Depending on your settings, they may be able to see your photo, tell when you are online, message you privately or add you to other groups without asking. Taking back control only takes a few minutes. Every setting covered here lives under Settings, in the Privacy and Security section; the exact labels may differ slightly depending on your device and app version.

Hide your phone number

Your Telegram account is tied to your phone number, but nobody else needs to see it. This is the single most important setting to check before taking part in any group.

Who can see your number

Set it to “Nobody” or “My Contacts”. Members of the groups you join will then only see your name and, if you have one, your @username. You can add exceptions for a few people you trust.

Who can find you by your number

Even when hidden, your number can let someone who already knows it find your account by saving it to their contacts. If the option is available, restrict this to your contacts. That way, a stranger who got hold of your number cannot link it to your Telegram profile.

Control what strangers can see

• Profile photo: limit it to your contacts. If you take part in public groups, pick an image that does not make you easy to identify.
• Last seen and online status: hide it from everyone or show it to contacts only. Bear in mind that you will usually stop seeing this information for the people you hide it from.
• Username: an @username is optional. It lets people find you through search without your number. If you set one, keep your full name, hometown and year of birth out of it.
• Bio: keep it vague, as it is often visible to everyone.

Also look at forwarded messages: a setting lets you stop messages you wrote from linking back to your profile when someone forwards them elsewhere.

Limit who can reach you

Being added to groups and channels

By default, people you do not know may be able to add you to a group. Spammers take advantage of this to drop you into advertising or scam groups. Restrict it to your contacts, and everyone else will have to send you an invite link that you are free to ignore.

Private messages and calls

Depending on your version, Telegram lets you restrict who can message you, or at least automatically archive and mute new chats from people who are not in your contacts. Turn on whichever option you have. For calls, allow contacts only, or nobody at all. When a stranger does get through, Telegram usually shows buttons to report or block them in one tap.

Secure access to your account

1. Turn on two-step verification: you choose a password that will be required, on top of the code you receive, whenever you sign in on a new device. Even if someone gets your code, they will not get in.
2. Add a recovery email: you are offered this when creating the password, and it lets you reset the password if you forget it. Use an address you actually check and that is well protected itself.
3. Check your active sessions: the list of devices signed in to your account shows the device type, approximate location and last activity. End any session you do not recognise, or all of them at once if in doubt.
4. Lock the app: a local passcode stops anyone who picks up your phone from opening Telegram.

Deleting messages

In a private chat, you can delete a message for yourself only or for both people. In a group, you can remove your own messages, while admins can remove anyone’s. For sensitive conversations, turn on auto-delete so messages vanish after the time you pick. Remember that a screenshot or a forward is always possible before a message disappears.

Account self-destruct

Telegram automatically deletes an account that stays inactive for a period you define. If you only use the app now and then, choose a long enough period so you do not lose your chats by surprise. If you would rather not leave a forgotten account lying around, shorten it.

Can a group admin see my phone number?

Not if you have hidden it. Admins of a group or channel have no more access to your number than ordinary members. They see your name, your photo if it is visible and your @username.

What happens if I forget my two-step verification password?

You can reset it through your recovery email. Without a working email, your options are far more limited: depending on the situation, you may have to wait several days before a reset, or start again with an empty account and lose your chats. That is why it is worth adding the address right from the start and storing your password in a secure password manager.

Does hiding my last seen make me invisible?

Not entirely. Recent messages in a group, your reactions or reading a private chat all hint that you are active. The setting reduces what people can see, but it does not erase every trace.
